The jubilant procession led by an open top bus carrying players and staff pulsed with pride and euphoria.

But as the sun began to set over Water Street, the celebration took a harrowing turn. Amid the crowd’s excitement, a vehicle plowed through a pedestrian crossing, striking dozens without warning. In the chaos, 47 people were left injured, including four young children, some in critical condition.

What began as a city’s proudest moment descended into confusion, terror, and disbelief. By the following morning, the nation was in mourning. Social media, once flooded with celebration, turned into a flood of sorrow and solidarity. Across Britain, the tone shifted from triumph to tragedy.

On Tuesday, May 27th, their royal highnesses, the Prince and Princess of Wales, addressed the nation in a rare joint statement released through their official Instagram story. Known for their measured and compassionate responses to national crisis, William and Catherine offered solemn words that bore the full weight of their roles as future monarchs and as empathetic parents.

The statement concluded with a powerful sign of unity. “At this time when the nation grieves with Liverpool, we remain steadfast in our support for one another and for all those enduring hardship. These moments remind us of the fragility of joy and the strength we find in solidarity. Our thoughts are with those who have been injured, especially the children whose young lives have been so deeply impacted. We extend our sincerest gratitude to the emergency responders who acted with such courage and urgency in the face of horror.”

She added, “Dev culture is we always have a hug.” So I quickly said without thinking, ‘Can I have a hug?’ His eyes were looking from one to the other thinking, ‘No, we’re not allowed.’ But he did.”

The Princess Royal then visited the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. During her visit, King Charles’s sister met with emergency service representatives and local officials who immediately assisted the victims of the car incident that left dozens injured.
