The Perfect Proposal on Hope Valley’s Water Tower Hid a Terrifying Reality Behind the Scenes

In the season 13 finale of Hallmark Channel’s beloved series “When Calls the Heart,” fans finally witnessed the long-awaited moment: Nathan Grant, portrayed by Kevin McGarry, dropped to one knee and proposed to Elizabeth Thornton, played by Erin Krakow.

Set dramatically atop the iconic water tower overlooking the sweeping valley of Hope, the scene unfolded as a breathtaking spectacle of romance, complete with sweeping views and heartfelt vows that left viewers breathless.

Yet what appeared as pure cinematic magic on screen concealed a far more harrowing truth.

The water tower proposal, hailed as one of the most ambitious sequences in the show’s history, pushed the cast and crew to the edge of safety and endurance, revealing fears, physical discomfort, and last-minute engineering battles that transformed a romantic vision into a high-stakes ordeal.

In a revealing behind-the-scenes YouTube video released by Hallmark after the episode aired, McGarry and Krakow openly shared the raw emotions of filming the sequence.

McGarry confessed he discovered a deep-seated fear of heights during the shoot.

“I’m fine with railings, but that water tower felt exactly like a diving board with nothing to hold onto,” he said, describing the experience as “extremely terrifying.”

Far from the confident Mountie fans adore, the actor admitted he gripped the structure tightly throughout, his anxiety mounting with every step.

Krakow, who had previously joined McGarry at the dizzying observation deck of New York’s Empire State Building, offered a striking contrast.

There, she had clung desperately to the walls, barely able to glance outward, while McGarry strolled casually.

On the water tower, however, their roles reversed dramatically.

“At first I was really scared,” Krakow admitted, “but I gradually got used to it. I’m not sure Kevin ever reached that point… he was holding on quite tightly,” she added with a knowing laugh.

The production team faced even greater challenges.

Executive producer and production designer Michael Magnusson revealed that the water tower was never built for human activity.

“It’s a beautiful aesthetic piece, but it came dangerously close to the safety limit—even as a set,” he explained.

When informed mid-season that the proposal would take place atop the tower, Magnusson recalled joking, “The funniest part is, it’s actually not safe. And there’s literally nowhere to propose up there.”

With no existing platform or guardrails, the crew scrambled to reinforce the structure under intense time pressure.
