Tom Selleck shares his true feelings about his recurring role on Friends
Tom Selleck has opened up about his time on Friends and has revealed that he had no idea that he would end up being such a big part of the series until the very last minute
Tom Selleck cherishes the memories from his stint on Friends, describing the experience as “lovely.”
The 79 year old Hollywood veteran, famous for his role as Dr. Richard Burke—Monica Geller’s suitor on the series—gushed to Parade magazine: “People talk to me about my role on Friends all the time. It was a lovely experience, something I didn’t see coming. ” He shared how it started with a leap of faith without a script in hand, recalling: “They just explained this idea and you had to make a leap of faith. They didn’t have a script or anything.”
His brief gig unexpectedly extended, he added: “I remember I was supposed to do three shows, and on the third show at the table read, somebody said, ‘Oh, that’s right, this is your last show. I wish you could come back.’ I said, ‘Well, nobody asked me.’ So that turned into ten shows.”
When quizzed about returning to comedy, Selleck eagerly responded: “I would love to do another comedy. The right kind of comedy.” Selleck emphasized his fondness for humor mixed with heart, stating” “Friends made people laugh and cry at times. That’s the kind of comedy I enjoy doing. Three Men and a Baby had that, too.”
Currently gracing screens as Frank Reagan in CBS’s Blue Bloods, Selleck entertains the idea of venturing into a spin-off, though he awaits any formal proposals, confessing his affection for his current character and the absence of offers from the network.
Tom, known for his role in the 2007 crime TV film Jesse Stone: Sea Change, remarked: “I’m open to suggestions because I love Frank Reagan, but nobody’s really asked. I don’t see him retiring and going off somewhere. If he goes off to a small town, I’d rather do more Jesse Stone movies.”
The last Jesse Stone movie was released in 2015 and the possibility of another film is still up in the air. Last year Tom told TV Insider: “It wouldn’t be a final one because everybody loves it. Jesse is a great character, and it would be fascinating to find out where he is quite a few years later. But I need to regroup; I don’t know what’s next, but assuming the phone doesn’t stop ringing, I’m going to keep working.”
