The Prince and Princess of Wales have resided at Adelaide Cottage in Windsor with their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, since 2022.
While their previous main residence, Kensington Palace, was partially opened for members of the public to visit, it’s a different story for their family home now.
London Calling? Not for Princess Catherine and Prince William.
However, the Wales will never move back to England’s capital city, even when they become king and queen. In fact, the couple is very much done with living there.
It is believed the family relocated to the countryside in order to escape the “goldfish bowl” of London, where they used to reside. So, it makes total sense that they now want to share as little as possible.
The reality is they are quite confined in what they can do in London. The kids can’t go into the park and kick a football with friends. Prince Harry is said to have even likened Kensington Palace to a prison.
But it doesn’t mean William and Catherine will never be in England’s capital city. Their private office will be in London. You don’t need to move back in to keep the flow of monarchy going.
What about when William takes the throne? That’s not likely to change his and his wife’s living situation, at least not enough to bring them back to London.
That means no Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis running around Buckingham Palace when their parents eventually lead the royal family. Maybe there will be a photo op or an event here and there, but no big Wales family move.
Adelaide Cottage is a grace-and-favor residence that William and Catherine lease from the Crown Estate, and so it is classed as a private home for them and their family, as well as the fact that it is closed to the public.
They are keen to keep looks inside to a minimum to ensure as much privacy as possible. The twee pink-fronted home underwent a full refurbishment in 2015, and it is thought to boast a beautiful garden, a cozy study, and a master bedroom formerly decorated with golden dolphins and ceiling rope recycled from a 19th-century royal yacht.
For Princess Charlotte’s 8th birthday, a tiny glimpse into their outdoor space was shared when Charlotte was pictured by her talented mother sitting in a wicker chair in their grounds. The woven chair is a modern addition to their outdoor space and rather different from the traditional wooden furniture they had at Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace.
Even when the family were living in the thick of it at Kensington Palace, they did ensure that their children could experience privacy in their own garden with a very clever trick.
Currently, William’s father, King Charles III, and Queen Camilla don’t live at Buckingham Palace. Their primary home is Clarence House, also located in London. They won’t reportedly relocate to the Palace until extensive renovations are completed in 2027.
William and Catherine are no strangers to London living. This family spent years living at Kensington Palace’s Apartment 1A. Although referred to as an apartment, the property, which remains their London residence, is more like a mansion. It has a whopping 20 rooms across four stories.
What Apartment 1A lacks, however, is privacy, which reportedly contributed to William and Catherine eventually relocating.
The future king and queen and their kids haven’t called London home since 2022 when they traded the city for Windsor.
England’s Adelaide Cottage, originally built in 1831 for Queen Adelaide, is a grace-and-favor home maintained by the Crown Estate and rented in contrast to Apartment 1A.
