CONGRATULATIONS! Prince William Got A Prestigious Title After Duke’s New Baby Announcement
Hugh is believed to be one of the few people who remains close to both brothers despite their fallout, and he is also a godfather to Harry and Meghan’s son Archie. He inherited his title and control of the Grosvenor Estate, then worth an estimated £9 billion, following the death of his father in 2016.
Prince William may soon receive a prestigious new role, strengthening his already close bond with his longtime friend Hugh Grosvenor, the seventh Duke of Westminster.
If there are two things Prince William doesn’t need, it’s more titles and more people to be responsible for, but he seems set to receive both for the price of one anyway.
After some joyous baby news, the future King of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, who will one day be the Sovereign of 2.7 billion people, just got even more responsibility thanks to the addition of a new member of the extended royal family.
No, Princess Catherine isn’t having another child, nor does the new baby necessitate a redrawing of the line of succession, like the recent birth of Princess Beatrice’s daughter Athena in January.
This week, the Duke and Duchess of Westminster announced they were expecting their first child together following their marriage last summer.
William will probably be expecting an important phone call very soon.
For those losing track, Hugh, a godfather to Prince George, has shared deep connections with the royal family for generations. His own godfather is King Charles, while his mother, Natalia, is one of William’s godparents.
With such a strong familial and personal relationship, it is highly likely that Hugh and his fiancée Olivia Henson will extend a heartfelt invitation to William to become the godfather of their first child.
This potential honor would further intertwine the legacies of the two families, continuing a tradition of deep-rooted friendship and loyalty.
Given William’s respect and affection for Hugh, he would undoubtedly embrace the role, adding yet another meaningful title to his already distinguished royal lineage.
The announcement of Hugh and Olivia’s baby will surely be a momentous occasion for both families. The Duke and Duchess of Westminster are very pleased to share that the Duchess is expecting a baby in the summer. The couple is delighted with the news and is very much looking forward to starting a family together.
So by the time summer’s here, we can expect the pitter-patter of tiny, very pampered feet and the news that Prince William has added “godfather” to his ever-lengthening list of titles.
For those losing track, his full and proper appellation is His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, Duke of Cornwall and Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn, and Baron Carrickfergus. I hope the Westminsters name their baby after their good friend. “Carrickfergus” Grosvenor has a nice ring to it.
Prince William served as an usher at the couple’s wedding last year, which was held on 7th June 2024 at Chester Cathedral. It was reported at the time that Prince Harry had also been invited but declined amid ongoing tensions with William.
Hugh is believed to be one of the few people who remains close to both brothers despite their fallout, and he is also a godfather to Harry and Meghan’s son, Archie.
He inherited his title and control of the Grosvenor estate, then worth an estimated £9 billion, following the death of his father in 2016. He is now ranked as one of the richest billionaires in the world, thanks to his estimated £10.6 billion net worth.
He received the title despite having two older sisters, and as it stands, Hugh and Olivia’s first child will also be impacted by a centuries-old rule.
Titles can currently only pass down the male line, known as male primogeniture, which means that the peerage can only be inherited by a male relative. Therefore, if the Duke and Duchess’s firstborn child is a girl, under the current laws, she will not be entitled to inherit the Westminster title nor the family fortune and estate that goes with it.
Instead, she would be styled as Lady, while the eldest son would be known as Earl Grosvenor until he inherits the dukedom.
The same rule directly impacted Hugh and his two older sisters, Lady Tamara and Lady Edwina Grosvenor, when their father, Gerald Grosvenor, the sixth Duke of Westminster, died in 2016. The family title went to Hugh, his third child and only son.
Lady Tamara married Prince William’s close friend Edward van Cutsem in 2004 and has three children: Jake, Lewis, and Isa van Cutsem.
Lady Edwina, meanwhile, married TV presenter and historian Dan Snow in 2010 and also has three children: Zia, Wolf, and Ora.
There is also a younger sister, Lady Viola, who married Dragon Guards officer Angus Roberts in a secret family wedding and celebrated with a party in Kenya.
