Captain Jason Chambersโ Below Deck Down Under Shocks Fans as He Reveals His Worsening Melanoma and Admits Heโs Running Out of Fight
Below Deck Down Under star Jason Chambers has been diagnosed with skin cancer.
The reality star and ship captain, 52, took to Instagram on Monday to reveal his melanoma diagnosis and admitted he had spent years forgoing sunscreen.
He said: ‘Update on the biopsy I had. It came back with melanoma. Iโm in Australia. That was done in Bali.
‘The Australian doctors, which are fantastic in Australia, they werenโt happy with what the indications told them to go to the stage two which would be to cut out a bigger section and test the glands.
‘Look Australia, two out of three people suffer from melanoma. Itโs a big thing. I never used to wear sunscreen when I was on the boat.
‘I used to put zinc on my nose, the reason being the chemicals. But thereโs so many products out there that are chemical-free now, which is great.

‘For someone that spent their life in the sun, as a child playing sport to working on the ocean, I thought I was resistant to the damaging effects of the sun.
‘I love the sun and its health benefits are evident, but be wise and like everything in life, itโs all about balance, choose your battles.
‘So, make sure you throw on some sunscreen, get some shade and cover yourself up and enjoy your day out in the sun.’
‘With a diagnosed melanoma biopsy, I now have an anxious wait and what I thought was a skin spot turned in just 6 months, early detection is the key.’
Treatment includes removing the entire section of the tumor or by the surgeon removing the skin layer by layer, immunotherapy, radiation treatment or chemotherapy:
Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. It occurs after the DNA in skin cells is damaged (typically due to harmful UV rays) and then not repaired so it triggers mutations that can form malignant tumours.
Chambers joined the Bravo show in 2022. The series chronicles the lives of the crew members who work and reside aboard a 150-foot-plus superyacht during a six week charter season in Australia.
Chambers shares daughter Saskia, eight, with his ex-wife Fuchsia Quinn.

Chambers recently sent tongues wagging over speculation he was dating model Laura Csortan.
In July, the former Great Outdoors host, 46, shared a video to Instagram of herself enjoying a beachside drink with the reality hunk in Bali.
In the footage, the pair sat on a lounge and clinked their glasses together before taking a drink while a friend filmed them.
But the model and Miss Australia winner told Daily Mail Australia she was in Bali for work and had been catching up with friends, including Jason, during her trip.
He was also briefly linked to Vanderpump Rules star Lala Kent in 2023 after they posed together at BravoCon.
In 2023 Chambers was lauded for his handling of a sexual misconduct scandal on the show which saw two crew members sacked for crossing boundaries with their co-stars.
Bosun Luke Jones, was terminated after climbing into stewardess Margot Sisson’s bed, who was fast asleep in her underwear, ‘without consent.’
Addressing fans of the show on Instagram, Captain Jason praised both the production crew and Aesha for how they handled the situation.
‘I’ve had a flood of messages over the last 24 hours from people in similar situations, some not so lucky [with] the outcome, so my heart goes out to them,’ he said.
‘I’d like to thank the production team for breaking the fourth wall and stepping in, then re-forming and allowing Aesha to come to me in an authentic manner, and then us dealing with it as we would as captain and crew.’
‘As soon as Aesha brought it to my attention I addressed it straight away, so it’s real,’ he said.
The seasoned skipper also urged people to ‘stop the hate’.
